How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets White

Painting kitchen cabinets in Flower Mound TX is as popular as ever.  Whether you do it yourself or hire professional painters, the return on investment of a cabinet painting project in terms of the visual impact for the dollars spent your payback is off the charts.   You can easily do a little research on how to paint kitchen cabinets white and get up to speed pretty quickly.  If you do it yourself you should expect to spend between $400 and $600 for primer, sundries, and paint.  If you hire professionals to do the project expect to pay somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000.  Still, when compared to the cost of a whole kitchen remodel it’s hard to beat the cost effectiveness of just painting the cabinets.

Cost-effective kitchen upgrade

How to paint kitchen cabinets white.  First, decide if you want to paint everything or just the doors, cabinet structure and drawer fronts.  Most pros will paint everything which requires you to empty out your kitchen cabinets.  If this is a DIY project, strongly consider not doing the insides.  That just makes an involved project even harder to complete.

If your cabinets are stained wood (as shown above) you will need to apply a primer.  Use an oil-based primer like Zinsser Cover Stain which is available at your big-box home improvement stores.  Lightly scuff sand the surfaces to be painted using 180 or 220 grit sand paper.  Brush on your primer and allow it to dry overnight.

Once your primer is dry it’s time to get ready to apply your white paint.  You will need to sand the primed surfaces again using 220 grit sand paper.  Remember to vacuum up all the sanding dust before painting.

Remember, the more expensive your oil-based top-coat paint is the more likely you are to achieve pro-looking results.  If you are brushing your top coat, I would recommend using Sherwin Williams’ ProClassic oil enamel in a satin or semi-gloss sheen.  Benjamin Moore carries our favorite oil enamel; Satin Impervo.  It’s what they call a ‘low-lustre enamel’ – the finish is beautiful.
